The ARTShops program is a collaboration between The CIRI Foundation, the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Established in 2016, ARTShops support emerging Alaska Native arts leaders to develop their skills in leading community-based arts programs.
For my Graduate ARTShop project, I was able to complete a workshop going over some Formline design concepts with the community of Kake. I was also able to assemble kits that included two original designs, material to apply to regalia, substitution components to potentially swap or include participants’ own designs, and transparency with design and design templates to apply to blanket and/or vests. These kits were distributed to 15 families, the Boys and Girls Club in Kake, a kids dance group, and members in the school district, in hopes to reach every kid in Kake. This was a meaningful project, as participants can wear their new regalia with pride as well as galvanize their identity as Tlingit people.
