Access to Alaska Native Collections

with Anchorage Museum

Hi, I’m James Gooch Eesh Hart and I was fortunate enough to receive the Access To Alaska Native Collections Award.

I had a great time connecting with staff, family members, friends, and most importantly the objects in collections the Anchorage Museum.

I was mostly focused on bentwood boxes during my visit and the design work that adorns them. I came back from my daily visits, sketched, and shared with one of my mentors for critiques. It made for long and fun days for my mind to wonder in Formline design.

I think I am at a place now where I’m starting to get the hang of how to approach designing bentwood boxes. They’re very challenging because they fill the space completely and no two are ever the same.

I was and am extremely happy and loved the opportunity to connect with the objects during my visit. It helped me advance my knowledge of design and will positively effect my art career for years to come.
