A Journey to What Matters: Increased Alaska Native Art & Culture Project Grant

Seal Skin Design

I just want to say thank you to all the funders for this project. This was an amazing co-hort to be part of. This group of women that I got to learn from was amazing and also very important to all of us. We were able to meet over Zoom monthly to share knowledge and techniques. Also to support each other as Alaska Native skin sewers, a lot of our knowledge has been lost.

This opportunity helped us gain more knowledge to teach each other new techniques. It also pushed
us to share our designs with other people.

In February, Dana showed her work at her first fashion show at the Ivalu Gala here in Anchorage. This gala is put on yearly by the Arctic Education Foundation for the benefit of North Slope students to support higher education.

Joni Earp taught a sealskin bow tie class at the anchorage museum, as well as creating a hunting bag for her son Robert. Joni and her son Robert go out seal hunting when they are back home in Nome, AK.

I also coordinated a fashion show for the Arctic Winter Games in March 2024.

I was the lead designer, and had my daughter Hannah participate as the youngest designer in the show. At 12 years old, Hannah showed her first collection on the runway to an audience of 500+ people.

I also had funding from the Arctic Winter games along with this project. With all the funding, we were able to have to freedom to be creative.

We thank you all for your support.

Quyanaqpak,

Bobby L. Brower
